On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. This day became known as Juneteenth — a combination of "June" and "nineteenth" — and it marks the true end of slavery in the United States.
For generations, Black Americans have celebrated Juneteenth as a day of joy, reflection, community, and resilience. From church gatherings and family cookouts to parades and cultural festivals, Juneteenth is a living testament to the strength and spirit of a people who refused to be broken.
On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a U.S. Federal Holiday — a long-overdue acknowledgment of its profound significance in American history.
