Born from the rugged hollows and rolling ridgelines of the Appalachians, West Virginia has always stood apart — and so will you in this stunning wildlife graphic tee. Featuring a breathtaking scene of a white-tailed deer, black bear, and cardinal set against a golden mountain sunset with a historic trestle bridge, this shirt is a love letter to the Mountain State.
The Story of West Virginia
West Virginia is the only state in American history to be formed by seceding from a Confederate state. When Virginia voted to leave the Union in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War, the western counties — largely populated by small farmers with little connection to the plantation economy — refused to follow. Delegates gathered in Wheeling, declared Virginia's secession illegal, and formed a loyal Unionist government. After a series of constitutional conventions and a vote by the people, President Abraham Lincoln signed the proclamation admitting West Virginia as the 35th state of the Union on June 20, 1863 — making it the only state created as a direct result of the Civil War.
The new state's motto, "Montani Semper Liberi" — Mountaineers Are Always Free — captured the fierce independent spirit of its people. From the coal mines of Logan County to the whitewater rapids of the New River Gorge, West Virginians have always carved their own path. This tee honors that legacy.
