A Brief History of Halloween
Halloween traces its roots back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "SAH-win"), celebrated on October 31st — the eve of the Celtic New Year. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin, allowing spirits to roam the earth. Bonfires were lit, costumes were worn, and offerings were made to ward off wandering souls.
When the Roman Empire conquered Celtic lands, Samhain merged with Roman festivals honoring the dead. Centuries later, the Catholic Church layered All Saints' Day (November 1st) and All Souls' Day (November 2nd) over these traditions, and the night before became known as All Hallows' Eve — eventually shortened to Halloween.
Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween to America in the 19th century, where it evolved into the beloved holiday of costumes, jack-o'-lanterns, trick-or-treating, and community celebration we know today. Here in Appalachia, Halloween carries a deeper magic — mountain folklore, ghost stories passed down through generations, and the haunting beauty of autumn nights in the hills of West Virginia.
