Long before trick-or-treating and jack-o'-lanterns, Halloween began over 2,000 years ago as Samhain — an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the thinning of the veil between the living and the dead. The Celts believed spirits roamed the earth on the night of October 31st, and bonfires were lit to ward them off. When the Romans conquered Celtic lands, Samhain blended with Roman harvest festivals, and centuries later the Catholic Church layered in All Hallows' Eve — the night before All Saints' Day. By the 19th century, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought these traditions to America, where they evolved into the beloved holiday we celebrate today: costumes, candy, and community.
Now imagine those friendly spirits skipping the haunting… and heading straight to the kitchen to bake a pumpkin pie. 🎃
