Long before candy corn and costume parties, Halloween was something far more ancient and mysterious. It began over 2,000 years ago as Samhain (pronounced "SAH-win"), a Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the veil between the living and the dead grew thin β spirits roamed the earth, bonfires blazed on hilltops, and people donned costumes to ward off wandering ghosts.
When the Romans conquered Celtic lands, Samhain merged with Roman festivals honoring the dead and the harvest goddess Pomona. Centuries later, the Catholic Church layered All Saints' Day (November 1st) and All Souls' Day (November 2nd) on top, creating All Hallows' Eve β the night we now call Halloween. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried these traditions to America in the 1800s, where trick-or-treating, jack-o-lanterns, and spooky celebrations took on a life of their own.
Today, Halloween is a celebration of community, creativity, and a little delicious mischief β which is exactly what the Moonlit Pie Club is all about.
