For thousands of years, dogs earned their keep. Ancient Romans posted mastiffs at the gate with Cave Canem ("Beware of the Dog") carved in the doorway. Medieval hunters trusted hounds and retrievers to track, flush, and fetch. Then royalty discovered tiny lap dogs, and the job description changed to "sit on velvet, look adorable." The Labrador Retriever came from Newfoundland fishermen who needed a dog to haul nets and retrieve game from icy water.
